Yep, Haynes is shit on wiring diagrams for the 3.
You need the blu/vio/yel that goes to pin 14 of the blue plug.

    Hmmm good times indeed!
If you need the pinouts for the fuel sender they are the brn/blk and brn/yel that go into the black plug. Theres only three or four wires going into that one so theyll be easy to find.
Does sound more like the actual cluster is at fault though.
Have you got an OBC? Would be easy to see where the fault lies as one of the hidden OBC functions is fuel remaning.

    good work as ever guys

as soon as it started happening i did a dash test and the gauge went up and down as normal
the problems started after i had the dash out to suss out the seat belt warning light
i do have an obc but its the 7 button version and im not sure how to find these hidden features

Sounds exactly like my '93 version, the light is just there as a reminder rather than being wired into the seatbelt catch. As such Id just whip the light out and be done with it.
Sadly as your OBC is only 7 button it wont have any of the fuel data going to it so there is no point trying to find hidden functions!
I guess you have two options here, either work out how far x amount of fuel gets you and keep an eye on the trip meter or try and borrow another cluster to see if it cures the faults.
