Hi I have just purchased my first BMW. I have a 1996 E36 318i Cabrio.

I have came to this recommended site for some technical advise.

I purchased the car quite cheap. The car is in pristine condition but has a couple of faults.

    1. The passenger window does not work at all. Normally when you open the door the window drops and goes back up when closed. Also the single switch for the window does not work and neither does the total switch. When i press the button you can hear the window ECU behind the glovebox clicking. There is no power getting to the motor. I have hot wired the motor and the window goes up and down.

    2. The electric roof was in manual mode when i got it. The orange handle under the back seat was pulled which dropped out the 2 motors. I have not put them back in as yet. Is there a safety switch on the motore causing them not to work when they have dropped out. Would the window not working cause the roof not to work.

I have a feeling it is the ECU behind the glove box but dont want to buy one if the problem is something else.

I would really appreciate some help
    Thanks Electric window

I have now managed to bypass the electric window and wired it myself. I have engaged the 2 motors and connected them across the battery. The roof cover opens and closes and the roof also goes up or down but i get nothing when I press the roof button. I know there are limit switches and if one of these dont work then the roof does not come up or down. Can anyone help on where to start looking.

    Hi Mate
Firstly before you start messing with the wire's have you check the fuse beside the battery, this is the main fuse for the roof, if thats gone no power, its sounds like the roof is working ok, check that and see what happens, once complete do a roof re-set mate

    cheers

Thankyou for the reply. I have not checked the fuse or done a full re set.
One thing before I do this, The passenger window does not work. I have disconnected the motor in the door and connected it to my own switch. This means the original switch does not operate the window. I know that when you press the roof button the windows should go down. Are these also controlled from the main hood fuse or the window fuses. If the windows did go down then I have been told the roof would still not work as the passenger window has not gone down. I need to know where the sensor is for the passenger window. If me lowering the window my own way would this trigger the sensor to say the window is down.
Please bare in mind that this is my first convertible and i have not seen the roof button working so I do not really know what should happen. I have also been told there is a red light that comes on but I dont know where this is. Thanks again RJB328i

I have checked the fuse which in a 1996 is in the main fusebox under the bonnet. Which is #35. It is ok and it also does the central locking which also works. I have done a full reset by pushing roof button and turning ignition on and nothing happens. The red light does not come on either.
