hi my 1996 318is has suddenly developed a abs warning light on the dash, also now and again under normal braking the front can seem to slide, the pads were changed 6 months ago, have checked the fluid level but cant find any problems any ideas?

For an ABS light, you'll need to get the codes read off - It's pointless guessing, it'll cost you an unnecessary fortune.

And what do you mean slide ?
You sure the ABS isn't kicking in ? Can you hear the pump going when it happens ?

You'll need to take it to a garage, who will plug it upto a machine which will pull the code's out of the ABS module... No other way of doing it !

If your coming to a stop, and the ABS pump is kicking in, then it'll be a sensor, don't worry though, your not actually sliding the wheels - All thats happening is the pump is taking pressure away from the 'affected' wheel and it'll feel odd.... But you'll need the codes read to be able to know which sensor it is.
It could be a duff sensor, or a bad ABS ring, the garage might advise you better !

Just having it on the ramps won't be good enough - All the sensors will look almost identical.... It won't be until the codes have been read off that you'll know which sensor it is. Although, you could be lucky, and be able to identify the offending sensor (Assuming it is a sensor).

It seems that the average price is about £30 I believe, for code reading.

You can check the wheel sensors using a multimeter. Do a resistance check across pin 2 and 3 at the connector plug.
The faulty one will not give any reading.(Or at least a big difference in readings to the other 3)
Spec for front is 1000 - 1200 ohms Rear is 900-1100ohms
The above is checking for static faults in the sensors.

You can also check them on AC with the multimeter which should if working correctly generate a stable voltage as the wheel spins.
