I've got a standard alarm fitted to my car (says cat1 on the control module) and it also has a black box behind the centre console and the original siren.

I've been to the dealers and they can programme me a new fob which they will supply for around 80. I think its a fair price but they can't tell me what kind of functions the alarm has.

Does anyone know what that black box is? I think it may be a microwave sensor? as the red light on it still lights up when its behind plastic and I move infront of it.

And could someone tell me the functions. Ie does it chirp when I unlock/lock or full closure etc.

the compact was my old one (well my mums lol) and i've just brought the convertible last week.

Is there any point in paying 80 odd quid to the dealers to supply and programme a new fob or should i pay 250ish and get a toad alarm with proximity sensor - I'm failry confident I can fit the new alarm, its just a matter of finding out how to remove the old alarm and find the wires that i'll need.

I don't want to be spending the money if theres no garuntee the oem alarm will work

I had the same problem with my old 318i....
It was a fookin nightmare trying to sort a fob and programming with BMW...

In the end I got a guy to remove the old system and install a cheap alternative...

Hmm Steve i'm tempted to go for the Toad Ai606 but its just a matter of getting the money together because theres so many modules i'll need to buy as an extra i.e the headlight activiation, microwave sensor x2, window closure and it'll all soon add up :|

But it would be quite cool if the alarm chirped if someone got too close to the car
