I have a 1996 BMW 316i Saloon (4 door) in which both windows on the passenger side have suddenly stopped working, the drivers side windows are OK. I have checked both motors using a direct 12v supply to the motor leads and they are OK.

Can anyone tell me where the control unit for the windows is located and whether this is a relay problem or not.

Type in "comfort relay" in the search field at the top of the page.

The control module is located behind the glovebox. It is housed amongst other modules in a balck plastic holder. It is the largest module and has about 5 different plugs attatched to it

If unsure the PM me and I will post up a picture as I have a spare that I can take a picture of

Check out Fuse 14 and make sure the connections for the fuse are ok,in fact just replace the fuse altogether and recheck!!The unit that controls the windows is the General Module or ZKE,which is behind the glovebox as already suggested. The comfort relay controls both windows AND sunroof, but I am not sure as to whether it would be fitted on your model,I dont think so to be honest.I know that it sounds strage....but could something have been spilt along the window switch side of the centre console??Normally if the ZKE goes tits up,no windows work.It would be pretty easy to check under the switch unit itself as well...
    Just a thought,
    Robbo

A 1996 will be ZKE module controlled like Robbo mentions, there will be no comfort relay

    Gentlemen

Many thanks for all the helpful replies. I have removed the glove box from the passenger side, the only units that I can see with multi-lead connectors are the ABS unit and two other units one with a blue multi-lead connector and the other similar but with a yellow multi-lead connector. Can you described the appearance of the ZKE module and where it would be located in relation to these other units. I have checked the console switches and leads and they appear to be OK
