when i bought the car it came with 2 keys 1 normal key and 1 with 3 buttons one of the buttons being bmw logo tried this but wont lock or unlock so went to change batterys and saw sticker that says replace batterys within 1 minute so purchased stated batterys removed cover no batteries inside so put new ones in
and guess wot it dont lock or unlock so searched on net for how to reprogramme key and it says turn ignition on and off within 5 secs and then hold down unlock button and then press logo button 3 times while still holding down other button then release this button and turn ignition on and off within 5 secs to store
tried this many times but no luck still wont work cant see led on key to tell if key works or am i doing it wrong or do i have to dealer to reprogramme
    all help much appreciatted

The instructions I found are as follows...

    1. Enter the car and close the driver’s door
    2. Insert the key
    3. Turn ignition to position 1 for max 5 seconds then back to position 0
    4. Take out the key
    5. Hold down the unlock button, then press the logo button 3 times within 10 seconds (while still holding down the logo button)
    6. Release the unlock button, the LED should flash slowly for a few seconds and turn ignition on and off within 5 seconds

Did you have the door shut?
Did you turn the ignition to position 1 only (1st click, before the radio or ignition lights come on)
Did you remove the key to do the procedure?

    Hi Dazza,
I dont know if it's the same with the compacts but I'm told your car is too early for the 3 button key. I'm also told that for the 3 button key you should have a red blob under your rearview mirror. If there is no blob then you have the wrong key. A dearler sold me the 3 button key as the computer said I should have it but its turns out I have a 3G alarm which means I have the separate 2 button fob. If you read through my thread you will see a picture at the end. On the left is the 3 button key that doesnt work as a remote and on the right is the original key with the newly bought 3G fob.

Also have you put the battery in correct as there is a red LED on mine when you press a button.

well thought id ring the local dealer and he said that the car must be unlocked by remote to enable recoding of key using the above process coss mine was left with no batterys in ill have to take it to them where they have to remove glove box flick a switch and then use a tool to reset hhmm not sure about tool maybe its just a matter of flickin switch cost to sort by bmw is £43.50 may try just flickin switch and trying above process will let you know how it goes
