hi, I have searched and searched many places for an answer or help to my question and I hope this is the right place to post.

I bought a 1996 318i for my son, it has the 7 button basic OBC and we picke dup an 11 button to replace it to try and get the check function and all that.. I have only found threads about the 18 button upgrades etc.

It seemed to be a straight swap with the one connecter in the back. It works fine as far as lighting up and displaying time and date and it will do a display test which I belive is test 00 or something. We try test 19 and it does not come up with the words lock on or lock off or any such thing.

The problem here is that I am blind and I am trying to help a 17 year old with this and keeping his focus can be hard lol.

I have a couple of specific questions that I hope you all can answer.

    1. Is there a way to check if the car actually has the check code module? If not then I am wasting my time.

    2. If it does have it, do we need to sync it with the car somehow?

    3. If we do, How do we do it. I have foudn threads talking about hexidecimal codes anda bunch of different options then it will say well this doesnt work blah blah blah and then the thread ends. It is like leaving a movie ten minutes before the end and not knowing what happened.

I have read quite a few threads on here about different things and you all seem to finish and report all findings very well, and i am confidident someone can help.

This is our first BMW and I know it is a lot different from other makes.

I also have a problem with the central locking system and I foudn a thread on here that we are going to follow that was very helpful with diagnostics, Could this be related to the problem of the OBC not functioning correctly?

Hit me with your questions and I will answer them as best I can and as quickly as I can, Thanks in advance for any ideas or suggestions

If your 7 button didn't have Check Control, then your car won't be fitted with the Check Control Module.

As far as i know non of the 7 button OBC have a check control on them. If you can upgrade to an 18 button from the analog clock and the car has a CCM there but not used.

I was wondering if there was a quick way to tell.. Something in the engine compartment? a brain behind the glove box sort of deal

It's something to do with the ZKE module, but can be a lot of wiring, even as far back as tail light wiring and having to modify or change the rearlights.

Plenty of info in the "How to" section.

Might be beneficial to compare the wiring in your black plug with the how to artcicles to get an idea of how much you need to do.

Well for a couple of extra wires you may as well go 18 and have the fuel functions.

However, if you look at an 11 to 18 how to you will see the wires added in that as the ones you can ignore and leave out, more of less.

The features of each are as follows
    • 7-button MID with ambient temperature, clock/calendar, and Memo functions
    • 8-button MID with clock/calendar and Check Control functions
    • 11-button MID with ambient temperature, clock/calendar, Memo, and Check Control functions
    • 18-button OBC (Bord Computer V) with all of the above, plus Code and trip computing functions

Basically all you get extra is the check control for the 11 button, tha hardest bits to add.

I might just do that, but I read somewhere that some cars dont even have the CCM, do you have any idea how to tell if the car has one or not?

Also do you happen to know if the functions are the same on the 11 and the 18, or does it unlock in a different way. I dont knwo why I cant find any info on the 11 button lol. I must be cheap cause i picked up the 11 button for ten bucks instead of paying 80 or so for the 18.

I I will have a closer look with my son at the wires maybe that will tellme more what is on the car.

It's all about the ZKE module and whether or not one is there with the appropriate terminals free.

I would solder and heat shrink wire joins and not do what this guy did for the connections.

However, this is pic by pic including the ZKE and I think is a left hooker.

So this minus 11 to 18 wires plus solder may be what you need? Not sure if he ever got check working though

Remember tail lights may need changing or modifying as well.

Thanks, that is the first time i have seen the connectors for the 11 and 7 button referenced properly. I think this will help a lot.
I will let you know how it ends up.. A blind guy and a 17 year old.. boy this should be fun!
