I have a BMW E36 320i 1995. I need the car back on the road ASAP.
I am in the processes of fitting an alarm, so the car is in bits at the moment and was testing all switches just to make sure they all work before connecting the alarm.

But the light in the boot will not work for love ar money.

    The bulb is good.
I have a good earth from the boot lid switch screw to the body of the car and the switch is in good working condition.
    But still no working light.

Anyone got any ideas how to check and diagnose this fault please?

    Have you checked the fuse?

No not yet. I thought the fuse would be fine because the interior lights and glove box light are all working fine.
I put the meter from body of care and got 12 volts from both wires either side of the bulb. I'm just not sure what I'm looking for to diagnaose the problem.

The fuse is no. 33. Have you tested the switch?

Checked the fuse and that was fine.
I found the Brown/white stripe wire in the boot put a pin through it and tested the wire back to the switch and found no continuity so there had to be a break in the wire between the inside of the boot and the the boot lid itself.
I then pulled back the sleeving that's in-between the boot and boot lid and found not 1 but 5 broken wires and 2 others with bare wire showing through. So I'm going to have to cut them all off to enable me to pull the sleeving completely off so I can examine the full length of all the wires and then solder and heat shrink some sleeving over the joints.
It must be a common problem on these for so many wires to have nbeen damaged with age.

    Thanks all for your help.

Thanks for the info - will keep an eye on mine ( recently spent days trying to trace something similar on the motorbike - would have helped a lot to know where to start checking )
