    HI,

Looking to upgrade my lights to HID but was a bit put off after doing some local research re MOT testing....

the question...with the conversion will it pass?
the answers....maybe, no, defo not, possible, etc, etc...

Now i need sound advice from fellow Bimmer lovers....have you had it done and as a result has the car passed the testing? what make and prices?

Looking to buy 50w kit around 5500k so to keep light white not blue. quoted at around £135.00 and local garage will fit for arounf £30 - £40, if not conversion then just change the bulbs????.

Want the car to have the modern look!!!!

Any help with be greatly appreciated.

    Nick

i got a kit of ebay for 50 quid, works great looks fresh, however its against the law and shouldnt pass the mot. mine did, depends on the tester, there is no point spending 170 quid, get a kit of ebay. takes 15 mins to fit.
to make it legal you need self leveling lights, wash spray, and the correct mirrors/filters in the headlight units.

It will pass the MOT as they aren't covered under MOT yet as far as I'm aware. However, Police etc can do you for them, as mentioned, they need auto-levellers, headlight washers etc.
I would avoid going to 50w. You don't want to attract too much attention with them, 50w will be very bright, and cause most likely unwanted attention from the Police.
If you are going to do it, stick with 35w.

HID's ARE NOT an MOT fail. The levellers and washer law comes in with construction and use. You cannot fail them for not having them. You can still be pulled over by the police but the tester cannot fail your car.
The only MOT criteria is that the light must be mostly white, if they are too blue, thats a fail.
Any other colour of light other than white at the front is a fail. Apart from indicators....

Cheers for clearing that up Steve.
As for what kit to go for, go for a 6000k or lower colour temperature and as stated, go for 35w. 55w kits are stupidly bright and will cause way too much dazzle to oncoming traffic.

Have a look at my E36 HID conversion DIY as well
