I recently found a thread on another website about a wiring problem on all e36s, it is the wiring that runs through the boot. The problem is when opening the boot the wiring is chaffing inside the rubber tubing and wires are prone to short due to all the plastic on each wire wearing away, I just thought i would let everyone on here know about this problem, If they have any electrical problems look here as one owner found out when he was on the motorway and all his lights went out

this is a very bad thing that happens to e36's especially. my car was the same. I just quickly soldered a couple of wires together and insulated them. The funny thing is i ended up fixing mine after buying a loom in (good condition) apparentely. It was worse than mine. then complained. he sent me out another then found that was even was than the one he sent me before. So its a very common fault and im not even sure alot of people know about it.

Thanks for this post, I woke up to a flat battery this morning. Four of the seven wires were severed. Lots of solder and insulting tape later, hopefully it's fixed after the battery is charged overnight!!!

Eek, will definitely check this on mine as the passenger brake light sometimes doesn't want to work.

    Nothing wrong with bulbs, etc.
