I checked the car but can't find the box! Not under the cover of the passenger footwell, not behind the glovebox or steeringwheel.

However I do have a siren next to the diagnosis adapter under the hood
and have the red LED near the gearstick.

    Grtz, from Holland

The main control unit should be behind the glovebox if it's a BMW alarm system. If it is a BMW siren, then it should have the logo on it, check and see.

Yes is has the BMW logo. It's the sealed model no switch and a 3 wire connector.
Maybe a previous owner has dismantled the unit, can't find the box!!

You may have to bite the bullet, and buy an after market alarm system.

The car has already an intruder switch under the hood, I've to find out where all the sensorwires came out to connect this to a alarmsystem. I've found a loose big black connector behind the glovebox. Maybe that's for the alarmunit.

Nice info, I found this item on Ebay, another type of e36 alarm. I think of buying it. But it comes without RM's and the connectors.

Anyone familiar with this Metasystem M96 alarm?
