About 2 months ago, one of the red warning lights on the dash instrument cluster came on for few minutes, then went off again, then on and stayed on. The light in question is the one to the left on the row of red lights, its a brake symbol with with 3 ticks to the left & to the right. Its the one to the left of another brake symbol with an exclamation mark in the centre and to the right of the amber abs light. All the others light up when you switch the ignition on and then go out (except the one I mentioned which satys on all the time)

I checked the brake pads and found the rear ones where worn and the sensor was touching the disc. I assumed this was the problem, changed the pads and found that the light was still on.

Can anyone tell me what this light indicates.

The car brakes fine and did before I changed the pads too. There is another sinister fault with the handling which I'll put in another post when I find out what this light is trying to tell me.

It's the ABS Sensor light, I believe.

You were right to check the brakes, as it indicates when the pads are getting too thin..

However, a common fault with the e36 is sensor wear - it may need to be replaced.

Sounds like the brake pad wear sensor. These should be changed when you do the pads.

The ABS sensor will only come up on the abs warning light.
