if you folow my thread you will see i have retro fitted the saloon dash and got everything working.
i now only have 1 issue left to sort, this is the headlight switch wiring.
the saloon switch has 10 wires, so does the compact switch.
each switch has the same colour coding bar 2 wires...
i need to know what each wire does to enable me to correctly retro fit the switch...

    can anybody help?
    pics to be posted shortly.

i have accessed an onine e36 electrical troubleshooting manual but it is of no use!!!

Does the compact switch have the dimmer built in? What are the wire colours that are different?
Is there a brown wire from the saloon switch but not from the compact one
Is there a grey/red wire from the compact switch but not from the saloon?

    Got your PM,
So you now have a saloon dash in your compact, so you will have a separate dimmer.
The red/grey wire from your car loom needs to go to pin 2 on the dimmer unit.
Take an earth to pin 4 on the dimmer unit.
Grey/black wire from saloon switch connects to grey/black wire from car loom - you then need to take a splice from this to pin 3 on dimmer unit.
You need to conect the brown wire from the saloon switch to earth.
I can't remember where the switch was located on the compact as opposed to the saloon, but there seems to be a separate unit that provided the illumination for the lightswitch on the compact whereas it is internal on the saloon. Did you have a plug spare from the cluster area with a green/blue and a brown wire on it? I think there's one for the fog light switch as well. This part I'm not too sure about. You may have to check that out.
The rest of the wires should be a case of just joining the matching colours together from the switch to the car loom.
I don't have time to go through the diagrams in depth so I guarantee nothing

the illumination on the compact was 2 seperate wires with its own bulb-so thatll now be redundant!
Switch was located in the same area as the saloon...
my compacts fog switch was to the left of the wheel, im sorted with that thanks...
