so any idears what it could be?
any help or idears would be very helpful.

Sounds like a flat battery which then got charged by driving it. Is this the first time it happened?

Had a similar problem once on an E30 it was just clicking turned out to be a loose connection on the battery, other than that dead spot on the starter motor maybe?

no it started last night as i was going through country lanes somthing flicked up i heard a knock but didn't really take any notice then stopped turned engine of for a bit then wouldn't start luckly i was on a hill so could bump it.
same problem this morning just the starter clicking so maybe this mystry object hit the stater wire and made it loose i don't know how low the starter is so just guessing.

As corbs said above mate. Check the battery and starter for any loose connections. Also check the engine earth connections as well.

If all of those are well, i would suspect a faulty starter motor...

To rule out a engine earth cable use a jump lead from a good clean engine earth to a good clean body earth.
