just thought id put this thread in because its doing my nut in now,
i drove my car on sunday about 45miles no noises nothing..
start of this week i thought id better check my oil level so i did and noticed which looked like shoe laces but hang on a min i checked my belt and holy crap,,,,two yes two parts of it had been eatern off by something.
so went to my local parts dealer got a new belt..put that on everything back together thought better start it up see if its ok...
turn the key started ok then in a split second jesus it sounded like my car was going to die...
so had a look in the engine bay in sounded like a ballbearing turbo nackerd bloody loud banging, grinding noise .
anway that hour got my local garage to have a quick look on my lunch break bloke said "think its your tensioner or pulley"
so i went and bought new tensioner and pulley put that on hell fire that noise goes right through you its horrible , he pushed on the tensioner with his bar and the noise stoped arhh luvly,, let go and it was back again.
so retuned the tenioner and pulley back to the shop looking like a right dumb @wat
he played around with the steering pump in out little movement (but theres surpost to be)
but spiining it sound bad so got a second handone put that on yesterday put it all back together and its still there not thinking what about the crank,, no play there,no play on the water pump,no play on the alternator but it has at least 0.1mm play in,out and when i spin it it sounds squeaky realy bad and aprently they have bearing in and a clutch would the bearings be shot.,,,,
but its only 13months old but,,,its reconditioned
and the belt tries to jump up onto the wheel on the back of the alternator v wheel and make the tenstioner jump left and right the bloke said you might have a spring missing i said i dont its tentioned by a small shocker and that fixes to the car.
,so i started the car without the belt on it sounded lovely arhhh but cant run around like that all over the place itll over heater and kill the battery,,
big question here what is it i think its the alternator please somehelp i cant keep chucking money at it im losing here and the fault is winning me.
it would be a massive help if some one would help the garage cant work it out neither can i

i put the alternator on a work bench and clamped it in place with a g-clamp, span the pulley with a 24mm socket attached to a 3,000rpm home drill span it for 30seconds,
    nothing.
only when i put my ear to it i can hear a scarping,
    no play in it.
my work mates say its ok nothing wrong with the alternator ,
me i say is nakerd because theres no pressure put on it thats why i recon it cant be found unless you put the same amount of pressure on it am i right??
plus when its on the car all hoocked up you can see the belt wanting to jump up,
    onto the
,pulley on alternator that why its shiney and can see it do it
,power steering pump already replaced (second hand)
,you can see the tenstioner go up,down freely thats new
,water pump pulling that in,out bit of play on that when i spin the water pump i can hear the bearings they sound fine
,but when i put my hand on the alternator when started i can feel it banging its horrible so i run to turn it off very scary. is there anyway i can check when its on the car if its alternator like charging method reading it with a multi meter..
ow and theres no play on the crank pulley either

Are you sure its not the water pump these give up the ghost and sound awful, also I had to replace the tensioner on mine. Was fine with no tesion on it, but the bearing in the roller had gone causing the belt to fray....

all im thinking is if it was the alternator surely the battery light would come on.Maybe you should look at your water pump.Do you know when it was last changed
