i'v now checked the common problem on the boot lid with the wiring loom but all is ok. and i'v recently just changed my sterio but i,ve checked that too although i,ve just put in 8000k xeon lights on it would this affect it even though the head lights are not on? any ideas would be gratefully recived as i can see myself getting caught short with a dead battery.

Im sure ive read somewhere about the headlight switches going faulty and causing strange problems...
Cant remember where though mate. Might be worth trying one.

Have you double checked the stereo wiring, as i know there is a wire to dim the head unit display when the head lights are switched on...

Is it the dash lights as in battery light, oil light etc. or the backlights that light up the dash.
And by plate light do you mean the number plate light?

haven't checked the radio wiring yet so i shall do that but i took the old headlight switch out of my dead e36 and that didn't fix the problem

yes it's the backlight on the clocks is pemantly on and yes it's the number plate lights.
thank you both for you replys.

So you changed the main light switch. Could you unplug the light switch and see if the fault still happens

Does the dimmer still work? What happens if you unplug it?

yer unplugged the dimmer and the lights went off so all good thank you.
does this mean the dimmer has gone or the wiring to the sterio is faulty?

Well it is a strange one.
It could be the stereo wiring if it's only been doing it since wiring the stereo.
If you have an old E36 there you could try the dimmer off that just to rule it out.
