Motronic is Bosch, DME is Bosch's term for the ECU.

I was told that to identify which engine I had, I had to check if the oil filler cap was at the front (M52) or the rear (M50) of the rocker cover. Mine is at the rear, so it should be an M50 if that information was correct.
PM me the last 7 digits of your Chassis number(VIN number) as found on your V5 or on the chassis plate

    I see!

so will It be ok to use the Bosch ECU that Guildersol has posted, that's on eBay or should I try to stick to a Siemens? Finding a replacement Siemens is like looking for rocking horse sh*t!

A Siemens wouldn't work, IIRC the pins are wired differently

Did you mean the Bosch wouldn't work Ronnie? It's already got a Siemens in it, although as you know, It's not working properly

Does anyone have any information on what ECU's from other models would be compatable with my car?

I found this information on another website and I wonder how accurate it is

Most of the ECU's for similar models will have differing numbers but do the same job. When the cars are built they are given a part number for the ECU (and any other part for that matter) and this is to identify that part to the guys who actually build the car on line. But if there is a slight change, even one as silly as changing the mounting bracket (or re-mapping etc) or the series of the part, the number is changed to reflect this. As the manufacturing life of the car continues and options are added this will also affect the part number on the ECU but will have no effect on the workings of it for the earlier cars. Chances are you could try any ECU from a similar car and it would work. Some might be geared more toward economy and others toward performance but as long as they are for the same car and similar spec then you should be ok.
I did an ECU swap with one of my cars for a much later ECU with a completely different number and it still runs fine.

    Any thoughts on this anyone?

I've done a lot of research this evening and have found information that suggests that the E36 320i, E36 325i, E34 520i & E34 525i all with the M50 engine can take the same ECU as long as you swap the chip over from your old DME. I also found information that I should have a Bosch DME and not a Siemens. Apparently all BMW's from 1985 onwards, are fitted with Bosch equipment, so I don't understand how I have ended up with a Siemens DME in my car

I have fault codes and live running data sheets for Siemens MS40/MS40.1 as fitted to the e36 320i 206S2 and 325i

And the e36 328i had a Siemens ECU so that info is wrong
