The DME that I have in my car is a replacement from an E34, 520, 2L, M50 engine. The BMW hardware number on it is 1703808. I am assuming that the original DME would have had a different number. Does anyone know what this number is?
Am i correct in saying that any DME that manages an M50 2L engine would be OK for my car, as long as I swap the chip from my existing DME to the new one?
I need to get another DME because I suspect that the circuit board has been damaged by water and is showing a software fault on my Carsoft Diagnotic kit. The fault code is: DME40_FE.DXT

Any help or advice will be very much appreciated

You need to use a Siemens ECU, It should have a SIEMENS MPI DME MS 40.1 ECU, number 5WK9 002. will try find some more info out. Also that should be a m52 engine you have

So the DME in the car right now is Siemens, but it's not the original DME.
Can you find out from the previous owner whether the original one was Bosch or Siemens?

This company deal in DME's and may be able to advise what model you need then you can try and source a cheaper one

    http://www.bba-reman.com/catalogue/P...px?category=55

they seem to quote a Bosch 0 261 200 405 for your year and model

That is the same one they quote for a 525 of the same year.

If that wer to be the case then heres one

    May be of some help

Thanks for your help Ronnie, much appreciated

I was told that to identify which engine I had, I had to check if the oil filler cap was at the front (M52) or the rear (M50) of the rocker cover. Mine is at the rear, so it should be an M50 if that information was correct.
