    i have a 1994 E34 touring
i was in the scrapyard the other day and picked up a obc (on board computer)
now the obc came from a 5 series touring the same as mine, same age even same colour... but it was a diesel

i have read the guide to fitting these in cars that never had them as standard
but the guide says you need a chip from bmw and to solder some pins in the obc to fit the chip (chip contains info on car, like tank size ect)

however this obc has a factory fitted slot and a chip fitted in the slot
so would the information needed by the obc on the chip be the same for my car as the car it came out of? (mines petrol auto - removed from diesel auto)

(i pluged it in, but the obc was dead... but the guide confirms this also and you need to add a 12v suplie to pin 17)

will i need a chip for my car or will the diesel one work?

That is known as the coding chip/plug

As mentioned it holds info relative to your car, like engine size, tank size e.t.c
