Hi I have a problem with my electric windows on my 1993 E36 318is.

they started playing up just after I bought the car 2 years ago .... sometimes they would work normally and sometimes they wouldn't after a while they stopped working completely until I discovered that they would work with the doors open (either driver or passenger) but not closed.

Then that stopped working too ... well it was 50:50 sometimes they would work and sometimes they wouldn't .... the key was "if the inside light came on with the door open they would work if it didn't they wouldn't" now that doesn't work either arrrgh!!

I have a Haynes manual which is about as much use as a chocolate fire-guard as the wiring diagrams do not match the components I have found or the wiring colours.

The Window drop works as normal.

There is no comfort relay in this model ... well if there is it is not where is should be either behind the glove compartment or driver dash or under the bonnet. ... it does say in the manual they were not fitted on all models.

At Xmas I have a problem with a flat battery and on opening the passenger door the window went down all the way and would not go back up again even after getting the car started. on stripping the inside door panel I managed to get it back up by disconnecting and re-connecting the drop cable over and over until the window was fully up again....has anyone got any Ideas how to help ... where is the ecu for the windows? haynes says in the door but I saw a completely different unit for sale on evilbay that was advertised as being the correct on for my model and said it was situated behind the drivers hi-fi speaker in the foot well ...is this so could this be at fault?

Download the Bentley manual, there's a electric windows ELE-231 diagram for a 1992 1318is model. It has 2 separate modules for driver and passenger doors.

I'm sure pre '94 cars had the comfort relay. Its a red one IIRC either behind the glove box or above the steering column. Swap it out for another and see if the windows work. If you've had a look at all related ground connections (under passenger carpet too) and they're okay then i'd suggest replacing the ZKE module.

There is not a single relay behind the glove compartment.
There are three relays behind the drivers side panel 1 orange relay and two light grey ones. (At the side of the steering column)

When you say above the steering column do you mean behind the clocks? because they are directly above the steering column.

I am now an almost happy bunny this problem has been solved A bunch of 7 red/green cables under the passenger side carpet were corroded ... is now fixed and windows work as does the central locking and immobiliser which it seems were all connected to this set of cables.

Just need to sort out an emissions prob as the car failed the MOT today on that problem hmm
