The battery suddenly went flat overnight and now all that happens is the hazard lights keep flashing, no power to starter, can hear the fuel pump going though. Sounds like the anti theft is not working properly. Car hasn't got remote central locking. Have charged battery but may not have charged enough yet. I found a black box under the glove box that had lots of wires going to it & when disconnected stopped the hazards from flashing all the time. Could feel & hear a relay going inside. When switching hazards on with switch another relay makes a horrible buzzing sound. Any help or ideas much appreciated.
    The car is an e36 4 door 320i on a k plate.

You need to check the switches-particularly the bonnet switch.Another thing to check s the cables going into the bootlid as these are prone to breakage

What is the box you are on about, what is written on it, any part numbers.
Is it an alarm unit or some other aftermarket connected piece of equipment?
How about a photo of it?

Check the connections on the engine earth. The earth strap is on the drivers side of the engine and bolts to a bracket on the drivers side engine mount. Check this has not broken or frayed and remove the bolts and clean each eyelet connector...

Thanks for the replies have now sorted problem. The black box was an aftermarket alarm that had been fitted very badly . Traced the wires and found a relay had been fitted to the main starter wire from ignition switch and this wasn't working due to dodgy earth connection. Remade earth problem solved. Now looks like the alternator isn't charging and may have been the cause of the battery going flat. It never ends does it?
