Hi guys from sunny Slovakia where the beer is cheap, the girls are gorgeous, road-tax is non-existent and the pot-holes go to Australia : )

Am new to the site and am hoping someone can help me with some electrical problems that are driving me insane !

    1. Key-fob operation of central-locking is intermittent. Sometimes doesn't work at all. Battery in fob is new. Fob : plain black rectangular with one black push-button plus red led. Make : SIKURA. I believe that the previous owner fitted new SIKURA alarm and SPYBALL immobiliser.

    2. Sometimes engine won't start at all when warm. Doesn't even turn over. Completely dead for approx. 1/2 hour then starts. Starts from cold no problem.

    3. On-board computer digital read-out gradually faded over time. Now non-existent. However, have recently found that if I gently tap the top of it with my finger, read-out lights up and becomes visible.

    4. OBC dashboard lcd controlled by stalk not functioning any more either. When I push stalk I get no response. However, when I turn ignition on, I get initial read-out re : service interval indicator. Odometer read-out on left works though.

Have fitted new battery. Makes no difference. Have had this car for several years and these problems only started in the past two years or so. Don't know if these problems are inter-connected or independent of each other. Also, am considering buying diagnostic scanner tool. Can anyone recommend the correct one for my motor, please ? Would Carsoft 6.5 be suitable ? And finally, would it be compatible with an Apple lap-top ?

Any help, advice or links would be much appreciated.
    Regards etc.

    Mercburner.

You need to check the wires that pass from the vehicle into the boot lid. Wires brake and make contact with each other causing many faults but mostly with the central locking.

The above is a very common problem

You will need to peel back the plastic sheath and check the complete length of the wires within it. Any damaged wires should be cut, soldered and re-insulated

    Please keep us posted

If the beer is that cheap are you sure the girls are gorgeous (beer goggles)

Also check the main battery connections are clean and tight and also all the connections at the starter motor (the OBC takes a supply from here as well). Check the main earth straps. make sure the engine is earthed and the connections are clean and tight.
Also would be worth checking the output from the alternator across the battery terminals.
Should be around 12v with the engine off and around 14v with the engine running. Switch on lights and lift the revs to around 2000 and the volts should remain relatively steady.

There is also a starter relay in the fusebox in the engine compt which you could check is operating/clicking when you turn the key on the ocassions when it won't turn over.

    OBC bulbs may be blown

Hey Gildersol, of course they are! Hic : )

I did buy a multi-meter, set switch to 20v and did reading on battery. Reading said 0.01v. Thus, new battery. Tried reading again and again 0.01v. Maybe a dud multi-meter : ( Will follow your advice and work on car over the weekend. Time for another beer. Thanks.
