Yeah definatly worth unplugging the relay too spike. Could be a short in the relay itself.
Definatly check the boot wires again though mate, i did the same as you when i got my car and two months later the wires broke again
I ended up soldering in new wires to make a permenant repair

Regarding the number plate light, if the boot wires are OK, I would check the connections are clean and dry at the bulb holders and that the correct wattage bulbs are fitted as this can cause errors to come up even though the lights are on.

As for the fogs, I reckon you have a short circuit somewhere between the fusebox and the light switch because if the light switch is off and the fog switch is off then the rest of the circuit is isolated.
Feel free to do any of the checks previously advised, because all sorts of things can happen with car electrics especially if someone has previously tamperfered with them.

However, my next move would be to disconnect the wiring plug from the back of the light switch, then put a good fuse in and switch on ignition. That way you are testing only the wire from the fuse to the lightswitch.

Read on another site, problems that the switch can cause.
For five pounds from the scrap yard thought it was worth trying before rewiring the fog lights?
