You say you switched on ignition, but did you switch on the foglights. And did you try it with the relay out. Fuse 22 is not for the foglights, it's for the relay.

Is it the Liverpool game you're watching. never a pen but a good game and they deserve to be in front.
If I'm understanding this properly, you have to have the lights on before you can switch the fogs on?
If you had no lights on or fogs switched on and the fuse still blew then the problem won't be the relay. You will then have a problem somewhere between the fusebox and the main lightswitch.

Yes it was Liverpool (great game and result)! The fuse is blowing as soon as the igniton is switched on (no lights on). Just one other point every now and then the OBC gives the warning 'NUMBER PLATE LIGHT FAILURE' but the lights are OK, this is not a new fault one that as been there for awhile and is only happens now and then?? Don't Know if I am helping with this comment or making things difficult???

Its also worth checking the wires where they go into the boot.
Pull the rubber grommet back where the wires go into the bootlid and check for damaged and chafed wires.
This problem can cause all sorts of lighting faults. It can also affect the locking in the future too. Very common problem on E36's

First job I did when I got the last year! Only taped them up will untape them and have good look at the wires? Is it worth unplugging relay and fitting new fuse or not??
