    Hello,
I'm new to all this and this is my first thread!
    I purchased a E32 735i Last week from a friend.
It was a long drive back and all was fine.
But since then it had developed a strange electrical fault!
The dash had a weird habit of resetting itself every once in a while, it sometimes goes dim and fails to illuminate!
The rear tail light seems to work at it's own leisure!
The cigarette lighters don't seem to be working!
I've had a brief search, could this be the connector under the passenger seat?
Or possibly the wires in the boot?
If so, where abouts are they located?
    Many thanks and kindest regards,
    Will.

That sounds like a similar problem on the later cars caused by a faulty ignition switch.

    Really?!
That's not too good! So there isn't any chance it's just faulty wiring somewhere? Just seems that way with the dodgy taillight.
How do I go about fixing the faulty ignition switch? Do I have to replace the whole unit?
    Thanks.

There is a lock barrel which is awkward, but there should be an electrical switch bolted on the back.
On mine at least, there are 3 switches inside which are supposed to work simultaneously.
what sometimes happens is 1 or 2 don't make the contact and some modules don't receive power, and get the power cutting.

I did order a switch at BMW, but they first off said it was on back order, and they still haven't contacted me, so I'll probably try taking the switch apart and cleaning the contacts.

If it's not that, it may be the instrument cluster, some E34s had NiCad rechargable batteries in the dash which would leak over time.
