I am looking at building a CarPC and I have a few 12v components which I was going to connect onto the 12v line currently used by the radio. Is this 12v filtered / regulated or should I get a DC to DC unit to smooth out the 12v ?

    Regards

It won't be, it'll rise to 13.8-14v when running. The carPC will handle it OK.
If the stuff was intended for cars, it would probably work fine, but if not, it might be 50/50.

OK, just though (hoped) those clever Germans would add nice stuff like this.

I have a 7" LCD screen which has a 5-24v input and then a mini-AMP which would normally take a 12v input so both "should" be capable of being connected straight off the 12v switched ignition circuit - taking this cable from the radio.

In reality, am I ever likely to get any mad surges ? I suppose I should fit an inline fuse but any suggestions on size ?

You won't get surges. If you do, the screen would be the cheapest thing to replace in the car!
From those specs, it should handle it fine.
