I am a bit paranoid now after being told that the noise I mentioned in this thread 1999 E46 323Ci - Slight knocking noise might be subframe damage.

What are the symptoms of this?

My car drives perfectly apart from when changing up a gear at slow speeds then I get this knock knock noise which is quiet but enough to hear. I have had a look myself but I am no expert and cannot see anything.

One thing I have noticed is, is that my car seems to be slightly higher at one side. That is the wheel arch on the drivers side has more space between it and the wheel than the drivers side does. Could it be that there is something wrong with the suspension like bushes or something?

My car was registered in March 99 it's only done 62ooo miles. Was/is subframe issue from the day of release or was it only after a certain amount of miles?

After higher miles, especially more so if you give the car a hammering, like trying to go sideways out of corners or drifting or lots of harsh engine braking.

So do you think I could rule out subframe damage. I was beginning to think it was a bush or bearing since the noise only happens when I am changing gear.

When ever I've driven a e46 with the subframe hanging out it has banged if I have lifted the clutch pedal really sharply to the biting point, repeated up and down movement of the clutch pedal in reverse or 1st gear made a loud banging from the rear.

I am not getting a loud banging noise but I haven't tried doing what you have, I will try what you have said and see what happens. It's only from 1st - 2nd and sometime 2nd - 3rd gear it's like a duh duh noise if you get what I mean.
