Beautiful car... But everytime I look into your beautiful eyes I feel the contempt that you have for my bank account.

For shock absorbers I got the BMW part number from BMW then used the ZF trading website to cross reference to the actual manufacturers part then used "Ziggy" on ebay to get, to the best of my knowledge, the identical product for half the price

What exactly is wrong with the current springs then?

Most E46's came with ZF Sachs shock absorbers from the factory, so maybe go for a set of them. A lot of people go for Bilstein B4's, which I would definitely not describe as a sports shock (i.e. more OEM spec than sports spec).

Exactly, hence my post on how to get the exact Sachs / Boge items for less

    nothing is wrong.
I assume that after 120.000 miles the characteristics of them might be a little bit off...

    that is the only reason...

Unless they're broken (the characteristic of metal fatigue), stick with them! New shocks will transform things, as will replacing any worn bushes in the suspension - of which there are many.
If your ride has just gone a bit wallowey, replace the shocks & take it from there.
