if you have a warning light on replacing pads will not put it out. you need it re- set with diagnostic software

Have you checked the sensor on the other axle?

I had this and the sensor was worn so needed a new sensor, but could also be the rear sensor.

    Untrue on E36

My guess would be you ran the car with the light on a few weeks. This can wear out the sensor.

Try turning the ignition on (without starting the car) for 30 seconds, this should reset the light if everything else is as it should be.

Oh I forgot that once changing the pads on my mates E36 he had the key in the ignition to have the radio on. The ABS systme noticed one wheel was turning withouth the others and the ABS light stayed on for 10 restarts until it auto cleared or something.
