Hi
I am new to this forum and thought I could get some ideas for my e36 328. Its due a change of brake discs and pads but im not sure what to go for. I don't go on tracks just road use. I've heard a lot of negative rumours about grooved and vented discs, thought you guys can help me out. What's a good upgrade for normal road use to go for which is cost effective??
If you go the E46 330 route I think you need the servo as well.
I went for drilled and groved Mintex front and rear, did S/S Goodridge hoses at the same time, YES more noise, under normal load you don't notice, when you push a bit more you can hear them, however, they are fantastic and not too loud.
I like them, but I'm an easy driver on the brakes, I'm quite smooth driving wise.
I upgraded 3 years ago to slotted front disks and std pads. 50k later I need to replace them.
This time I will go drilled slotted with ATE low/no dust pads... Std pads are dirty b***ers and exacerbated by the duct air cooling.
Slotted will wear faster, however the slots let out-gassing escape. Picture a steak on a BBQ...
If you drive like my 84 year old day, std is fine.
If you need to repeatedly brake hard, slotted and or drilled.
I understand drilled and slotted discs to warp much more commonly than std disks.
This can lead to noise, pedal pulse and go all the way to fracturing and a trip to hell...
I'm in Aussie, so rain isn't every day nor are puddles, so I have a lover risk of disk warp.
I had no idea about upgrading to an e46 330i caliper.
Lastly, Brake fluid is hygroscopic, meaning is loves water. It absorbs water in a flash, so should be flushed or it will create steam in your brake calipers and pipes. Unlike a fluid, you can compress a gas.....
Dont forget to clear the fluid in the ABS.
I did that by slamming on the brakes over and over.
Good luck !
