My charitable local BMW dealer would like to relieve me of £800 for two front shock absorbers, so are there any cheaper aftermarket parts anyone knows of for my E34 525ix. The front suspension is totally different from regular E34's unfortunately :-(

I would imagine that due to your car being so rare it is a main stealer part only.

Aftermarket componants normally come on to the market when there is a high demand. Unfortunately for you I don't think there was probably high enough demand to justify commencing production.

It doesnt look like other E34 dampers are interchangeable

    http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...17&hg=31&fg=10

    01 LEFT FRONT SPRING STRUT 1 31311139087 $441.94
    01 FRONT RIGHT SPRING STRUT 1 31311139088 $441.94

but in the US they are the price shown above.

Hopefully Ronnie will find some good aftermarket dampers that are not so pricey....but it may be an idea to try and get your current ones reconditioned by a specialist company?

I knew there was something I was supposed to get back to!

The front shocks we got were from Wood of Bournemouth BMW main dealers, they were £180 + VAT each, part number B31.31.1.090.293(If my bosses hand writings correct!)

I had a quick look on t'internet and they are pretty rare right enough, check out this link and go to the bottom of page 1 and the start of page 2. Hope you find something.
