    hi peeps.

last december when the uk was hit by snow i went away and had left the motor in car park.
when i returned [the new year] i took it for a spin only to notice there was a grinding noise coming from the front every time i braked, also when braking at speed the steering wheel would shake.

i have had a look and to my surprise the front discs were rusted and carroded round edges . is this possibly caused by being left out in the weather. . the back discs seem o.k so i think there more newly replaced than the fronts.
is this a problem anyone has come accross.. and is this because there cheap factory discs. will be very greateful for any advice on the best disc and pad setup, but at reasonable price for fast road use.

    cheers all.

Salt + Damp + No surface contact from pads will cause rusting.

Maybe the composite of metal is different between front and rear, maybe that the fronts are more worn.

Either way a few journeys should remove the layer of rust, it is perfectly normal.

if you can feel the brake disc with your hand, how much of a "lip" is there (that's an indication of how worn the brake discs are).

If in doubt take it to a garage, im sure even kwik fit would happily let you know if they are safe or not!

    thanks pal. good advice .
have given motor a spin for about 55 miles and still grinding when brakeing and steering wheel shakes when brakeing at speed.
face of discs are fine but there is quite a bit of rusted lip around outer edge.
will now take it to my local kwikfit garage and see what the score is, just hope this has'nt done damage to callipers.?

Shouldn't do, not trying to ask you to suck eggs, but you checked pads?

Grinding in common when your brakes where through and the pad braces bite into the discs.

You of course have some other issues, is the grinding coming from the actual wheels? I had a grinding noise that seemed to be related to the abs rather than the bite on the wheels.

I also had a sticky caliper a few weeks back which caused vibrations when braking!!

i checked pads, looks as tho theres still about 50% left on them.
if its to do with callipers sticking would'nt there be uneven where to the pads as this has not happened. also grinding only accurs when brake pedal down and not when lifted.
when you had trouble with ABS did telltale warning lights come on as i have had no lights come on dash.
i didn't get round to takeing to garage today as am tired and cheesed off lol...
what brake setup have you got and or what would you reccomend as am seriously thinking about upgradeing all round from standard brakes.

thanks again for your info mate.

Chat with CRN, that's what I am doing (they are on the forums) http://www.bimmerforums.co.uk/forum/f132/

They offer good prices apparently so considering getting a new all round setup.

I had no warning lights, I have some steering wobble under braking and I know that my discs are worn, maybe even warped so know I need to replace everything now.
