2004 E46 330ci Bushes Powerflex (knocking included)

HI all I have intermittent knocking on rough roads at the the front left of the car. Took it to Quickfit and the guy said it was the lower rear bush (not sure how he knew with just a look and not jacking it up?!?)

My main question is can I do it myself or do i need a mechanic to do it as he said it will cost me £320 to do both front sides as they generally go together? I usually do easy things like brakes etc but not sure how hard it would be to do these, plus will any special tools be needed as I have a basic set but don't mind

Second question is in regards to me change them to the Powerflex bushes, so would it be a better idea to change all the front ones or just the ones that need doing, as I don't want to have the same problem a few months down the line with another set and waste more money fitting others. If the others are generally OK then I don't need to bother with them...

Thanks for your help

Marcus

you can get these bushes for around 40 quid and fitting is really easy.
i would recommend sourcing some powerflex polyurethane ones though...similar price, but you have to reuse your existing carriers(lollipops)
you have to pull your old bushes off the arms...a g clamp can do it,or a hub puller.
£320 is extracting the urine i reckon

320 quid? Even if they were replacing the whole arm as well as the bush either side I would still say that is expensive:yikes

I would recommend you take the car to an Independent BMW specialist and have them check it out for you. A good technician will diagnose the fault and show you.

When you go to the car tomorrow, before getting in grab hold of the front wheels at 10 and 2 o'clock and try to move the car backwards and forwards in short sharp bursts. If the bush has failed then the wheel will move within the wheel arch. Sometimes you can actually push on the wheel with one hand whilst looking under the car to check the movement in the bush:thumbsup

I really need to do a "How To" for checking these bushes as it is such a commonly asked question:thumbsup

i will be fitting mine in a couple of wks, and i am planning on a how to guide. if you can wait then i will have a set of 66mm lollie pops for you, you just have to give the site £5.
