So the car is booked in with the garage I bought it from, at the end of next week. I don't see why I should pay for MORE stuff that's wrong with it when I've only had it 3 months!

They couldn't find anything wrong - and more over said they couldn't even hear the noise!

I have to admit when I went out with the guy driving I couldn't really even hear it. It's so annoying cos on long journeys it drives me mad!

I have the same noise with my 325i at second gear and also vibrates at speeds of 45 mph. I have replaced both rear wheel bearings, both axles, and center support bearing. I checked my guibo or whatever that rubber thing is between the driveshaft and the trans and the problem is still there. The only thing left for it to be would be my rear diff if that is any help to you. I know it's not my bushings either because it is a howling sound when driving as well. This car is about to kill me because I have replaced just about everything in and around it and still not done with the problems. Don't get me wrong, they are nice cars when everything is in good working order. If you do have a bad wheel bearing, I have some really good cheap tips to help you replace it or them and will give you a list of things to buy that would only cost you maybe 25 bucks.
