    Hi guys,

I have nearly fixed all the problems with this 328, I say nearly because I have a very deep rumbling sound under hard acceleration, most prominant in say 2nd gear but also interestingly whilst cruising at 80mph.

Another strange thing to note, is that when driving over bumpy roads, the same frequency of noise, i.e a low pictched rumbly noise can be heard. It almost sounds like it could be suspension related and when I accelerate hard it vibrates something causing this deep noise.

    Has anyone any ideas??

    Thanks,

    JP

could well be a wheel bearing.
its not your usual tapered bearing on bm's...they fit a flat one.
    what i've felt,what i've known
never shined through in what i've shown.

wouldn't a wheel bearing make noise all the time, getting louder the faster I go? Not just from harsh acceleration?

You could jack up your car and check for wheel bearing play JP.

Please prefix all your thread titles with

    2000 E46 328i -

The rumbling could well be the rear differential if not a wheel bearing.
A wheel bearing wont do it all the time necessarily. As more power is put throught the wheels this puts more stress on the bearings...

how many miles has the car done?

i would suggest the following - buy an infra red temperature gauge (digital) off ebay. (about £30 ish for a cheap one)
They are fantastic diagnostic tools. Then drive the car for a while until the noise is there.
Take a reading from both back wheels and both front wheels by aiming the probe at the centre of the wheel hub.

All temp readings should be around the same for each pair (the front will be higher temp as the front brakes do more work).
if you get one side at the rear that is more than a few degress hotter than the other...thats the problem side. Likely a bearing, or possibly binding caliper but thats unlikely.

If that checks out ok then jack the rear up and put it on axle stands.

Get under the car and grab the propshaft with one hand and a driveshaft (the bit that goes from the diff to each wheel) in the other. Twist in opposite directions to find out how much play is in the diff.
If theres more than say a mm or twist in either direction (before the gears engage and stop you turning) then your diff is likely at fault.

Sorry about the thread title - this forum is a little different to others I use....

I will have a go at the diff this weekend; and see if I can rule out that.

If so, I'll move on to checking wheel bearings etc.

BTW - the car has 80k miles on it.

    NO worries re the title.
It does seem an*l I know but the times we have let it slip the forum just becomes a jarbled mess of meaningless threads (like many other forums are!!) like

    'brake disc' or
    'engine overheating' etc
and when people search for stuff, they find a tonne of useless garbage all about different models to the one they want.
