    Hello
The ABS warning light is illuminated all the time. My local BMW dealer wants to replace the whole thing at a cost of 1500 euros ..........we live near Avignon in France. I got a local guy to check out the situation and he says that the fault is in the front left wheel hub. The other 3 wheels ABS works but not the front left. If you interchange the wires, capteurs in french, the situation is the same ie front left doesn't work but front right does. From this he deduces that the problem is not the wire...capteur but within the hub itself.
If anybody could confirm this as being the answer to the above would be grateful.........or are there other scenarios.
Lastly the guy thought that even if his solution is correct and he changes the bit in the hub the light might well still be illuminated because the onboard computer has a memory and may need to be reset and he doesn't have a "valise"......computer, with which he could reset stuff.
I'd appreciate any help on this matter in plain english as technology is not my strong suit.
    Thanks in anticipation
    Wilko

If your mechanic has tested the speed sensors and found them to be ok, then he is correct about the hub. There is a reluctor ring inside, that works in situ with the ABS sensor. This part may well be damaged.

    Hi Neal
Thanks for your reply but what are the speed sensors and what do they look like. Sorry but i know nothing about cars. Bitmore info: the wires that connect to the hub, capteurs, were magnetic........he said this was good. When he turned the disc he said that there should be a loud clicking noise, in this instance it was very faint. I am most grateful for your help and patience.
    Regards
    Wilko

    Hi Neal
Thanks for your very speedy response. They are les capteurs in this part of the world. One last question.......where would I buy the reluctor ring and what sort of price are they ?
    Many thanks for your help

After some 7 months the problem is not sorted but has been found. According to the guy there is a problem in the wiring between the speed sensor on the front left wheel and the control box. He says the problem is finding where the wire is broken and this could take a great deal of time. Are there any quick ways to isolate the problem in order to fix it, ie is this a common problem and the break occurs in a specific place. Be obliged for any info on this and if you respond cold you use non technical terms as I have to put the reply through Google translate into French for the mechanic.
    Thanks in anticipation

It may be in the control unit as BMW think.

It should be similar to this.
The ABS control units are cheap to find on ebay used, £30-40, or there is also this company that makes repairs
