    Hi guys,

    Wondering if anyone can help.

I have just replaced both lower suspension arms, the nearside hub ball joint was terrible. After replacing the nearside I could still feel a little play in the offside wheel. I decided to replace the arm on this side as well even though it wasn't anywhere near as bad as the other side in the hope that it would clear up this play.

However after replacing that side as well it doesn't seem to have made much diffrence, if any.

It's like the play is comming from within the steering rack.

You can see the track rod end moving with the play however the rack on the other side of the car doesn't move at all.

Has anyone come accross simular symptoms before??

Would quite like to get some advice before I start tring to replace the steering rack.

The inner tie rod ball joint usually wears out on the 3 series. The play is usually here and not in the rack. You can uscrew them from the rack and just replace the inner tie rod and track rod end...
Number 4 and 5 on here shows both sides....http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...40&hg=32&fg=25

It is worth cutting the ties and checking under the steering rack boots for any power steering fluid leaks first.....

    Hi Steve,

Thanks for the reply. I removed the gator and had a look at the play on the inner ball joint.

There does seem to be a little play comming from here but more concerning is that the rod that the inner ball joint is screwed onto is also moving from side to side.

I Guess that this is not right?

If not can the steering rack be overhauled?

The rack would be an exchange unit mate...

Seems like most of the side to side movement was due to the steering lock being on

Just replacing the rack ball joint seems to have done the trick.

Still not convinced that the rack is 100% but the guys that did the tracking said everything seemed solid enough, so I will live with it for the time being.

Thanks once more for the help mate .
