I recently bought a 1 owner Avus blue late 1999 323i Sport touring manual. I dropped it off to my trusted friend and BMW specialist for a HUGE overhaul/service including;
Inspection II (Mobil 1 0w40, oil filter, air filter, fuel filter, pollen filter, gearbox oil, differential oil)
Water system overhaul (metal impellor water pump/gasket, thermostat, thermostat housing/seal, both drive belts, mechanical tensioner and A/C idler bearings, coolant)
Brake overhaul (front and rear brake discs/pads/sensors, front brake flexi hoses and new fluid)
So as you can see I've gone to town getting it upto my specification.
Now, Stuart has just called me to tell me the rear springs (changed 30K ago/4 years) have snapped AGAIN! Rubbish BMW springs, I won't be fitting another genuine set.
So, me being me, there are a number of options. I was hoping not to spend too much here as it's only a daily driver. Below are the options;
1 - Fit aftermarket lowering springs (FK @ £80, Apex @ £100, Cobra @ £130, Eibach @ £170)
2 - Replace the whole lot with a fixed rate lowering kit (FK High tech £220 when available, AP @ £270, Apex @ £320, KW @ £380)
3 - Go for cheapish coilovers (AP @ £380, Hot tuning @ £180, V maxx @ £360)
I must admit I'm not too keen on coilovers (although I have a very tidy set of TEIN on my Integra DC2) so would prefer the fixed option. BUT I can see where this will lead and I'll end up spending a fortune on this car.
What would you do? I'm tempted with the FK Germany spring option for the sake of £80. They are German made and progressive, but I figured with 108000 on the car the dampers may be past their best and it would be a waste of time/money removing the suspension and not changing the shocks.
What are your thoughts? Read a good review of the FK high tec suspension kit on an E36 in Germany. Is that a safe bet?
To throw a spanner in the works I have a set of BBS RC alloys in 8x17 and 9x17 that I will be refurbishing in shadow chrome and fitting, so a quality drop would look awesome.
Any advice appreciated, especially from those who have completed such works on a E36 touring.
Cheers guys, I have until tonight to make my mind up; tomorrow I will be ordering!!
