i am planning to upgrade to vented discs of a 325i and i was wondering if i can use my pads in the 325 calipers? is the only difference the width of the caliper to fit over the discs?

If you're fitting new discs you really ought to fit new pads at the same time.

you can use your pads as they are fitted from the 316i to the 328i
    http://bmwfans.info/parts/catalog/34116761244/

but you may have to change the calipers
    http://bmwfans.info/parts/catalog/34111165559/

and the brake carriers as they are only fitted up to the 318ti
    http://bmwfans.info/parts/catalog/34111164221/

the calipers and carriers may not be wide enough to fit over the width of the disc although the diameters are the same

this may sound coincidental but i have just swapped my front brake set up on my E36 318iS for an M3 setup, i can give you the calipers and carriers for a good price so you can run the vented discs, if you're intrested
