Driving home from the gym today, as I gently set off from a roundabout (behind a ford transit), my car started making a faint sreeching and grinding sound from the n/s/r corner. Based on the symptoms below, does it sound like my brake shoes have reached their life expectancy?

    - When I did did my rear discs and pads about 1 year ago, my trusty mechanic advised that my rear brake shoes need doing, but will last a while longer.

    - I have also notcied that for some time, when I release the handbrake, the n/sr rear corner (even on a steep hills) sticks until I move the car a couple of yards (by putting it in gear and attempting to drive off) and then I hear another faint sound of something back there in that corner clicking as its being released and feeling more free.

    - At the moment there are no vibrations or anything and the sound is always there regardless of speed.

It sounds bloody embarrasing at the moment!

It does sound like rear shoes, not a big job and if the mechanic said a little left and a year has gone by then this does point to the shoes!

As above, sounds like the shoes. Worth checking them out anyway if they're low as that's when the lining can come off. I had this happen and the lining got jammed causing the wheel to lock up

If the wheel can lock up (since its been sticking on the rear corner for sometime until the force of the cars drive releases it), I'm getting it booked in with my mechanic.

Seen that the decent brand brake shoes will set me back about £20 ish which seems reasonable (don't trust cheap parts).

You may need new discs also(hopefully not), if the shoes haven't been adjusted up properly they don't clean the inside of the disc/drum arrangement, this leads them to getting very rusty inside, then the handbrake works cr*p/holds cr*p after fitting shoes as it can't grip the rusty part properly, sometimes they can be cleaned up with Emery paper etc, but if really bad then you will need discs or a lathe

Just a heads up so you know what to expect

Many Beemers suffer with the handbrake issue that you explained. Sticking of one side

Best to get it looked at sharpish or you will definately need new discs too

Cheers, discs and pads are reasonably good, near enough newish.

Cars going in to my mates to have the brake shoes done on Friay so I'll be blasting around in the T5 until then. Been in it all afternoon

Apologies Boostist - I'll give myself a slap

Ronnie - thanks for that. I am always there when the work is being done to th ecar and they have done the shoes on some of my previous cars and they do the job right. I will get them to thoroughly it all out when they do it though.
