    Hi All,

    Car was in for a little job on Tuesday and the guys in the local garage have informed me that both rear coil springs have snapped. He gave me a piece that had fallen off. He is quoting £70 for heavy duty springs and about 2 to 3 hours labour, which comes in at about £100 including the VAT. Happy with the price on the springs, but does it really take 2 to 3 hours to change them?

    In order to remove the rear springs, you have got to drop the trailing arm just enough to remove the tension in the spring. Most modern garages will carry state of the art spring compressors, so I don't think it would take them more than 1/2 hr each side.

    How long???

    Even I can change a pair of rear coil springs in approx 30-45 minutes

    Undo the rear shock from the bottom and strategically place a 4ft scaffold tube on the suspension arm in order to gain leverage to just pop the old spring out and the new one in

    In fact you probably won't even need the scaffold bar to get the broken spring out

    Or you get a fat mate to stand on the rear hub. That usually brings the arm down enough.....

    That's what I did last week. Easy to get the broken one out; a bit more persuasion to get the new one back in, but only took about 15 mins. It takes longer to get your jack sorted

    Told the guy in BMW spares dept that they make the crappest springs going. His response......................'Yeah, I know'

    I think I would be looking to take my car elsewhere as they obviously haven't a clue what they are doing so would not let anywhere near any of my cars

    Just the rears you say???

    We only used to allow our mechanic 2 hours tops on a 3 series lowering and that still gave him plenty of time without even breaking a sweat. In fact he often used to enjoy the days where he had 3 beemers in for lowering

    What I did when one rear spring on my 318 broke was grind the end square and paint it and then ground the other spring to exactly the same condition. If the cut end is at the bottom (usually where they break anyway) then the spring is safely retained in the suspension arm. It MoT'd OK in this condition.

    This was supposed to be a temporary fix until I fitted the pile of suspension goodies that I have been accumulating. However, this shortened rear spring is stiffer and the tail is sitting lower and the resulting handling is very satisfactory to say the least. The car is used mainly on the A82 and A87, and often in the wet, so it cannot be said that I have not challenged it.

    This has forced me to change my long term plans for the rear spring rate and height.
    A few minutes with the grinder has got me the result that I expected to pay quite a lot for in money and time. I shall still renew the dampers but what to do at the back for rate and height is something I am still thinking about. I still expect that an increase in the front spring rate will improve traction and stability but I am concerned about upsetting the current balance.
