Id suggest lowering springs and powerflex bushes, maybe a strut brace.
Lowering springs can be cheap, like £100 ish for all 4, although you get what you pay for obviously.

Depends how better you want it.

if you want to keep the comfort stick with your same alloys with atleast a 40 profile or higher. powerflex RTAB's to remove unwanted flex, poweflex ARB bushes front+back and replace droplinks with a good brand like lemforder. POwerflex wishbone rear bushes to stop lateral movement when braking.

Eibach springs improve handling without lowering the car too much, theres two different types you can get

Your looking at atleast £300 with the above i've mentioned so think it through

I'd just like to say, yes if I had the choice I would buy £700+ coilovers in his position, but with fitting on top (unless you can fit them yourself), its going to be an expensive time, and to be honest, why would you want to spend £800+ on just the shocks/springs ?
If like you say, you dont want to go too low, then obviously you are going to use the car as a road-going machine and not a track racer, in which case I think you would be wasting your money on expensive coilovers.
Something like -30mm eibach lowering springs on standard shocks, coupled with poly bushes (powerflex probably best option) will improve your handling very noticably, and you will still have some comfort to the ride and still be able to get over speed bumps no problems

If the car was only going to be used on pool-table smooth tracks, then sure slam it 60mm+ and rock hard springs
