Sorry mate, are you talking about stripping down the old leg to get the top mount off to use with the new one. Sorry i don't follow what your saying.

Basically, you need compressors on the spring when removing the top mount (if you are) from the old leg and re-fitting. If you undo the top mount with out the compressor the likelihood is you'll die when the spring goes off in your face.

But once you've got the new leg built (i.e. top mount is securing the spring to the leg) and your ready to fit to the car you no longer need compressors.

Be aware - if you are stripping down the old leg 318iS springs are long and they're a bitch to compress fully. Even when compressed if your undoing the top mount there will still be some tension in the spring so keep your head out of the way.

Sorry not being very clear. I have bought some new coilovers and strut mounts what i want to know is do i need to compress the spring on the coilovers to fit the mount as there seems to be no tension in it when i just apply a little weight.
The old struts etc are being binned not doing anything with them.

you should be able to get away with it once the spring seat is wound fully down

Ahhh i get it now. Yeah, what mark said... you shouldn't need compressors at all with it wound right out

Fitted the coilovers all was well but they are rubbing the spring even with a 5mm spacer, i am running style 30s 225,50,16 is it just a case of a bigger spacer and longer nuts or is there something wrong. Any help would be great as i need my car back on the road for Sunday.

    Cheers
