    Sorry I was half asleep when I spotted this on eBay.

    I've got a 1997 318is engine in my compact

    According to Wiki yes it will as "The BMW Compact was identical to the regular E36 saloon from front bumper to A-Pillar." (link). So AFAIK your not going to have any problems with clearence and the manifold will fit the M44 engine in your car.

    it doenst state if its for left hand drive or right hand drive
    if its for a LHD then the turbo will end up fouling the steering column
    loud-low-slow-project

    Whats disco said It will foul the steering column. Need to get one for a RHD car

    It can and will fit if you reverse it so that the turbo is placed upwards (aka a topmount). The steering column on rhd bmws is a notorious PITA with regards to fitting a bottom mount turbo. It has been done with a cast manifold that I believe CA Automotive used to sell.... but I would avoid them TBO as any half competent fabricator can slightly amend a bottom mount to make it work in top mount configuration
