Hey guys, I'm about to do a turbo conversion for my M3 Evo compact 318ti. It currently has a S50B32 engine with NOS...which as you would expect is not enough power!

I cannot decide which engine to use though - do I keep the S50B32, or do I go down the M50B25 non-Vanos with a 328i or the M3 3.0 crankshaft. Perhaps maybe I should look at M3 3.2 crank into the iron block M50? Does anyone know if this fits?

The uncertainty is mostly with the dual Vanos on the S50 and the difficulties in removing and reinstalling (need special tools and all that), and of course tuning which will be expensive...or specialist/ expensive standalone...

The M50 non vanos can run many a management system so will be much cheaper! and the non-Vanos engine means I don't have to spend any cash on special tools.

Any advise either way would be great!!

I am aiming for about 550 to 600whp and expect to rebuild whatever engine with uprated rods, pistons, etc...

My advice is if you're worried about spending money then step away from the project!
I too am currently working on a turbo project & it's turning into a bit of a money pit to do it properly!

Forget the cost implications - an M50 block with 328i bottom end, lower compression headgasket & ARP studs is IMO the best place to start, not because it's less expensive than the S50 but I consider it a stronger engine.

I'm by no means an expert on the tuning of this type of set-up, still learning myself! And there are guys on here that know a lot more than I do, but the type of power output you're looking to achieve should be possible with relatively few problems.

Possible with a turbo, and uprated engine parts, that's how you get all these jap cars running 1000bhp etc

I have kept the Vanos, (for the mean time anyway) it hasn't presented any problems so far - but if I had the choice again, I probably would have sourced a Non-Vanos from the start.
I've heard good and bad points about keeping the Vanos - not taking sides just yet...

600bhp isn't too difficult to achieve - it's making it useable in the real world & reliable that's the hard part & making sure the internal components stay intact!

I hear you, I am leaning towards the M50B25 non Vanos with a 3.0 crankshaft also. Bore of the 2.5 is 84 and the M3 is 86, stroke 75 and 85.8 so displacement will be just under 3.0, with an iron block - sounds great to me!!!

What EMS are you planning to use mate?
