Just looking at certain power gains to be had on 320 E46 2001. without changing exhaust system and adding turbos etc...
Can much power be had on this car by just remapping the car? I have been told when remapped, it could improve fuel comsumption also?
    my car standard is 170bhp...
benn quoted so far £250 ish for remap but with approx 34bhp gain... seems a little pointless for such a small gain!!
#i would be happy with 220bhp-230bhp... 50-60bhp gain... can this be done JUST by remapping without changed exhausts and adding cold air induction kits etc....
    chiefster...cheers...

if you're gonna get 34bhp from a £250 remap it is well worth the money and probably the best money for gains you could possibly get but most remaps will get you roughly 10%-15% of your total bhp.

    HI Chiefster

I didnt realise there wa sa 2.2 litre petrol 320i

Heres the spec for your car

    E46 320 spec

As you say, hp is 175 hp (convert KW kilowatts to hp using google)

I would say 34 hp increase from a remap is BS....

I would expect the car would make approx 190-195hhp tops with a remap

THeres no way on earth that 220-230 hp can be had from just a remap.

I would say its almost impossible without rebuilding the engine using high compression pistons and wild cams....

= Not worth it at all!

A remap on an NA (naturally aspirated) engine is never as effective as it usually is on turbo engines.

The reason being is that there is usually more headroom with a turbo engine and you can just turn the boost up.

If you seriously want 230hp or more you have two options...

Engine transplant...drop a 325i or 330i engine in there and rock and roll with a remap.....= LOTS OF POWER

or..and far more expensive and unrealistic for all but the most serious (and well off) of petrol heads...

    turbocharge the car

If I was you I would just get a remap to start..forget cold air induction. Unless the kit is TOP NOTCH it is usually a hot air induction kit and often loses power on the BMW intake box...but gains noise.

Exhaust may gain you 5-10hp but some backpressure is needed for an NA engine to assist scavenging the cylinders
If you then want more power, search the forum for engine swaps as theres quiite a few posts on them on here

chiefster6cyl, whilst i'm aware that the 320 is a 2171cc M54 engine i'm afraid that i'm leaning towards the information that Boostist has posted.

However I would very much like to see proof that these sort of gains are possible on any standard and normally aspirated car.

This is a more realistic power gain that you would be expected to see

Thanks for the IN depth replies..very good information.
Im cannot remember the site that claims 34bhp..somewhere in leeds..
i carn't help thinking i should have just bought a 330..lol.... 320 2.2 was same bhp as 323 so i thought that was the best option and cheaper on insurance..
definatly thinking for the extra insurance its worth buying the 330 than modding a 320 2.2...
you learn by your mistakes hopefully..ha..
    Thanks again...

    I agree mate

I didnt want to say it seeing as you HAVE bought a 320i!!!
but a 330i is definately the easier way to get more power...
having said that, for some people (myself included) the easiest option isnt always the most fun and I would certainly dorp a 330i lump in (or if you cant then pay someone else to)...

reason being is that blitzing fast cars from the lights in a '320' (330 engine) is great fun

Always sticking to the speed limits and safety standards of the roads of course
