Not sure if this is the best place to ask this question, so Mods feel free to move elsewhere...

I'm currently setting up the VEMS standalone ems on my 328i turbo.

Is the crank sensor a hall sensor - or is it VR?
I've had a mooch online - some people (mainly Americans) seem to think it is neither (which doesn't help much!)

    Any help would be appreciated...!

It should be Hall effect, it just sits next to a totally passive metal toothed pulse wheel.

I think I downloaded the software, but never used it before.
I looked into VR sensors, they are similar, but BMW has had a think for Hall effect, so it should be a hall sensor.

I did suspect that, only got confused when researching it on the Internet and getting responses from the american sites....
Apparently some of the 4 cyl engines use a VR and there was a recall on the m52, so some have a hall type and others have something completely different...?
I'll soldier on and hopefully get there in the end!

Hall effect is generally a 'falling' rather than 'rising' on the 'missing teeth' on the crank wheel right?

I'm not sure of the exact details on the pulse timing on those, It's something I take as a given.

As you bought the ecu from me you can email me with questions all the time and I´ll do my best to help.

And yes M52 engines have a Hall effect crank sensor and a Frequency cam sensor that doesn´t work with standalones, it would be best to fit a hall effect sensor from a vanos M50 engine.
With great challenges comes great engineering.
