How come not may people opt for the top mount turbo options on the right hand drive models of bm's once they turbo them?

It doesn't leave a great deal of space to thread the downpipe through with the steering column in the way.
Granted a bottom mount turbo doesn't either...

Here's a picture of my (bottom mount) turbo manifold fitted

    - imagine trying to get a downpipe back down under the car / past the suspension turret if the turbocharger was placed where the washer bottle is / where the external waste-gate (in this instance) is.

    Ah bummer!
Reason been is a top mount turbo IMHO looks the bollox, but it's like you said to get a down pipe past it all.
Beens mine isn't going to be used much on the road, can't i put the exhaust straight the the wing?
Otherwise it's things like custom bottom mount turbo manifold, then it's worries and oil issues with the turbo been lower than sump level :-/

I have seen a driftcar with the exhaust downpipe straight out the wing, 'twas loud!
It's not impossible to route the downpipe through with a top mount.

Couldn't tell you - bear in mind are you talking about doing this to a Z3 - space restrictions may be slightly different.

    This may help:
My drift spec E36 325 turbo

EDIT: This is a LH drive vehicle so probably not a great example.
