If you got your heart and bank loan set on a turbo you know what you got to do.

I'd never entertain the idea with my M3, it's the same as yours and I know that both of us wouldn't get all the performance out of it, that it has standard from BMW, it's just putting yourself in debt to make a car thats fast as F on a drag stripe that you'll use a handfull of times a year, you'll devalue it and always waiting for it to blow up.
If you were dead set to do it, you want to own the car outright, have the cash to do the turbo implant at a proper turbo engineering garage and also have the money to replace everything that brakes, then the insurance will more than likely double or triple.

I'd leave it, BMW did a great job building it and you'd do a good job of f*cking all their good work up.

As far as i am aware chasman is being told this by Horsepower freeks and i would agree with you, what a load of bull, its all very well saying it to sell you goods, but when you engine goes bang your see what answers they give you then
Hmm, I cant see them saying this TBO, they only sell kits to registered installer companies that they trust so as far as Im aware they dont offer a DIY option? (could be wrong though)

but they have it listed in their Stage tuning packages about what work needs to be done for what output and 700 hp woudl be their stage 3 package that includes a full engine rebuild iirc

at the very least it needs pistons, conrods and ARP head studs to cope with that.
The actual S54 B32 engines are very very strong though///

SC is less efficient and runs hotter.
    Just stating facts.

HPF are #1 when it comes to forced induction E46 M3´s.

There will a RHD E46 M3 turbo soon enough in the UK. I can personally promise you that.

Ok fair enough.....not arguing the efficiency point.

But why do we see shots of turbos glowing bright red hot. Do superchargers glow red hot?

Its the 'hot' side of a turbo that can glow red, the 'cold' side, (the side that spins up and sucks in air and forces it in to the engine doesnt glow red....

The hot side is working off the exhaust gases straight out of the engine and the harder the engine is working, the hotter they are, hence the turbo glow on a dyno or wherever

The reason a turbo is much more efficient is because it is working off waste products of the engine (the exhaust gases)

whereas a supercharger is a parasitic drag on the engine from the first minute its attached, as the engine has to use power to drive the charger pulleys, and therefore loses some stock power, before it makes any extra.

    Ooooooooh i see.

I thought the turbo as a whole got red hot. I was thinking surely the air, once it comes out of the "red hot turbo" is A LOT less dense than what would come out of a cooler SC.

    Obviously not.

    Cheers Boostist.
