im looking to buy a 330i e46 01/02 (3L) model.the car will only be for track use and i was just wondering if it was possible to buy any aftermarket turbos /superchargers.if i can could you give me any names/links or info. Thanks,im relatively new so correct me on anything stupid ive said (if any).so far i have exhausts body kit, spoiler seats stripping out useless heavy stuff such as seats, light wheels air induction kit and maybe a rebuild.

Im only 16 and you can call it childish,i know i cant even drive the car and i probably wont, most likely my dad will. But im looking to be a mechanic,so my plan was to buy a car (a decent one) learn on it and how things work before i attempt any mods etc.then once i think im ready, learn how to take off parts and reinstall them, then try and fit mods.

So any Advice and general help is appreciated. Thanks.

Hi there. You're one lucky 16 year old to have this as a project ;) Good luck to you.

My advice would be to set a goal for the car and develop a plan of how to get there. Right now, reading your post, it sounds like you want EVERYTHING. It's all very well bolting on forced induction but since off the shelf systems are literally just bolt on, you won't be learning much. You, or your Dad, will just find that you have a much higher probability of being the one who goes home early at any track day. There's always been a turbo car that blows up or has issues at all the track days I've attended.

IMO, if you have no experience at all, I'd suggest you buy the car and a Haynes manual and just work through it, understanding all the different systems of the car and how everything bolts together.

Then do some research into track car builds. You'll find lots on http://www.bmwowner.com and more specialised ones (race cars) on http://www.bmwtrackzone.com/ . Set your goal, price it up, build! :cool

This was the plan, maybe i forgot to mention it as i was tired.

I was going to buy the car, learn as much as i possibly can, then just take off stock parts and put the stock parts back on,then start to add bits here and there.i know a little bit about cars, not lots though. There are a few mechanics in my family, one being a mercedes specialist for 20 years and others just all round knowledge of cars.so if i needed help i would research it or ask.

Thanks for the advice.

also i dont have the car yet,and i probly wont be getting it untill i can afford it,but i thought if im going to do it then i should plan ahead.i can pick up a 330i 01-04 plate for about 3.5k

theres is really no limit to the price i want to spend on it,id build it over the years knowing its unique and built by me :)

I know plenty of BMW ´s run on the track and they all NEED a fan.

I find it insane to suggest such nonsense to people to not run a fan at all.
Even if the fan doesn´t do anything while under good speed it´s a necessity at times,
It´s a safety device for the engine.

I see what you mean. Yes, it's certainly a safety device that has an attached risk if you don't run one. Personally I feel the risk is low. Others, of course, won't. In 3 years of trackdays I don't think I've ever heard my fan turn on, even when I've been caught mid lap by a red/black flag and had to come in. On my friend's car, it runs without a fan, coolant thermostat nor oil thermostat and there have been no problems so far ;)
